Team Copper Country wins Midget AA national crown
Team Copper Country was pretty banged up during the MAHA state playoffs.
That’s what happens when you’re a split-season squad, with your team going their separate ways to play high school hockey from November through March.
The Copper Country boys came back together in time to reach the MAHA title game, and then they went on a tear in the national tournament, turning their at-large bid into a USA Hockey Midget 18U Tier 2 3A title.
These kids, they got rewarded for their hard work,” said head coach Micah Stipech. “They put in so much work, they compete so hard, they have so much support back home. It feels wonderful.”
The U.P.-based squad posted a 5-2 victory over the Clarence Mustangs at Suburban Ice East Lansing on April 10 to secure their national title. It was an emotional win for a club that featured many players from Calumet High School, which lost in the Division 3 state title game in March.
“This was fresh for them off that loss and that feels good for them, and I hope the coaches that coached them feel like they’re part of this,” Stipech said. “The Houghton players on this team, there are some that also lost a state championship so this feels fantastic.”
